Making a Birds Nest From Items on the Playground

What was tried in the classroom?

Part of our science learning was an inquiry about why do birds lay their eggs in the spring. Students shared talked with each other and shared their ideas as to why. Then we talked about what they use to build their nests. I had them pretend they were a bird looking to build a nest. They took a bag outside and had to look for things that they thought would make a good nest. Then we came back in and built the nests out of the found materials.

How’d it go?

It was great, They loved searching for materials and putting it together and we had a great discussion about why birds lay their eggs in the spring.
