Elementary Teachers Prepare For NGSS-Aligned Instruction

During the week of August 12 to August 16, more that 220 elementary teachers from 20 public school districts prepared to implement new science units based on the Next Generation Science Standards at ESD 105 in Yakima, WA. The teachers took on the role of students as they learned about activities from experienced colleagues or “Master Trainers”. The new units have titles like “How Do Weather and Climate Affect Our Lives?” and “What Is Our Evidence That We Live On a Changing Earth?”.

4th grade teachers learn about a new unit “What Is Our Evidence That We Live On a Changing Earth?”

3rd Grade teachers design a rain resistant roof for a structure. This activity is part of the unit “How Do Weather and Climate Affect Our Lives?

For most teachers, this training was their first experience with the Next Generation Science Standards. This professional learning was made possible by funding from the NGSS/ClimeTime Grant.
