Animal Ecosystems and How to Help

What was tried in the classroom?

This was so fun! My students worked really hard on their All About Animals Reports. They each chose an animal to research and learn more about. They then wrote a report about the animals. Since I was taking part in the Climate Emotions Class, I wanted to bring that into the project as well. We used NASA Kids to learn more about our animal’s ecosystem. We do Zones of Regulation at our school and have “zones” or colors of feelings. Green for happy/calm, red for angry/mad/overwhelmed, blue for sad/sick and yellow for frustrated/excited. After learning about our ecosystems, we discussed how the ecosystems are being impacted by climate change. I had students share what zone they were in after hearing about how climate change is affecting their animal. They then made posters about their animal in their ecosystem and how people can help their animal.

How’d it go?

It went well! The kids liked the assignment. They felt passionate about helping their animals and wanted to show off their posters. When parents came for Open House/Celebration of Learning, they got to see the posters and reports. We got a lot of positive feedback about students understanding the relationship between their animals and climate change affects.
