Teacher leader support focused on NGSS instruction using climate concepts

Are you a science teacher leader supporting colleagues in your elementary building? Are you being asked to be on an adoption team? Are you interested in learning more about Next Generation Science, especially climate science ideas, and sharing with your colleagues? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this workshop series is for you!

Participant outcomes

  • Awareness of climate concepts at the elementary level
  • Ability to engage students in instructional routines that support science understanding and problem solving
  • Emerging ability to partner with your district science leader to support adult learning of science instructional routines

Event content

  • Experience a climate science phenomenon related to the carbon cycle using trees.

    • Help teachers (adults) understand the “why” of climate science and not just the impacts

  • Experience AST/OpenSciEd routines focusing on …

    • Modeling to explain

    • Student discourse – visibility of student thinking

    • Supporting change in student thinking over time

  • Consider age appropriate climate problems and engineering solutions

    • Climate impacts in local community

    • Personal and community solutions

  • Get your adult (content) questions answered by an expert

Elementary Workshop Series Logistics

  • Two online, interactive workshops

    • Saturday, October 30 and Saturday, November 13

    • 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (Longer mid-morning break to grab a good snack!)

  • Four, 90 minutes online PLCs (6 hours)

    • November 16, December 7, January 11, January 25

    • 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM

  • $450 implementation stipend

    • Complete all project surveys including attendance surveys, session feedback forms and a practical measure (explained at session number 1)

    • Try something in your classroom and share the results at our final PLC

    • Reflect on your role as a teacher leader and how you might share what you learned
